THOUSANDS of Brits were scrambling to get home last night as more countries went into lockdown amid the coronavirus crisis.
Curfews and travel restrictions were in place globally as nations tried to halt the spread of killer Covid-19.
A passenger in the US told of “apocalyptic” scenes at airports.
One Scots couple have been left stranded in Tenerife after their flight home was cancelled at the last minute.
Ally Maconnachie, 28, and his fiancee Lan were at the airport when they were told that their flight to Edinburgh on Saturday night had been cancelled.
Ryanair has arranged to fly the pair back to Bristol – more than 350 miles away from their home in Glasgow – on Thursday, leaving them stranded on the Spanish island for four days.
Speaking to the Record, Ally said:
“The communication we’ve had from Ryanair has been absolutely woeful. They offered us some accommodation to stay at in the meantime but, to be honest, it just wasn’t good enough.
“Luckily we have some money left over to keep us going for the next few days, but there some guys on the flight who said they had spent everything.”
Airlines in Europe have begun axing thousands of staff.
And Brits managing to return here were shocked at the lack of virus testing, with one saying: “They couldn’t care less.” Another said: “People from Milan are just rolling through Gatwick without even a temperature check.”
Australia, New Zealand, America and Hong Kong have all begun limiting flights to the UK. Almost five million Brits live abroad while an estimated 350,000 are currently away on holiday.
