Meeting Lewis backstage was best night of my life

Singing star keeps promise to invite youngster and family to gig

- BY HILARY SCOTT

A YOUNG fan has described a trip to meet her pop idol Lewis Capaldi and see him perform live as “the best night of her life”. Thrilled schoolgirl Charly Bisset got to chat to her hero for 20 minutes before watching him take to the stage. A year ago, courageous Charly was battling acute lymphoblastic leukaemia when she received a surprise video-call from Lewis. One minute, the eight-year-old was singing along to his No1 hit Someone You Loved, the next he was serenading her. The Brits winner promised Charly tickets for his SSE Hydro gig on March 5 and followed up by calling her family at home to invite them on a special trip to see him. Dad Mark said: “Lewis kept his word after the initial video call when he promised to get her to his show and meet him in person.

“It was Monique, a nurse who looked after Charly, who started it all off, as she is a close childhood friend of Lewis.

“My wife Kirsty got a call from Lewis and his manager to invite us up that night.

“It was moment we’ll never forget.

“Charly got so excited she couldn’t breathe and we had to calm her down.

“Her older sisters were in complete hysteria.”

They travelled to Glasgow, parked in the backstage car park and were escorted into the green room to wait for the meet-and-greet with Lewis.

Mark said: “Two minutes later, he burst through the door shouting, ‘Hello’. He stayed talking with Charly for about 20 minutes and then posed for photos with the family.

“He was asking Charly how she was getting on with her treatment and what’s been happening since he last spoke to her.”

After receiving a bag of merchandise goodies, Charly and her family were escorted to their seats in the 14,300-capacity arena.

Mark added: “Charly said it was the best night of her life.

“She loved every minute of it and lost her voice singing along with every song.

“We can’t thank Lewis, his manager and the rest of the team enough for making Charly feel so special.

“And after the year she has had, she well and truly deserved it.”

Charly was reduced to giggles during their chat. She said: “Lewis was very funny and made me feel relaxed from the very beginning as I was nervous about meeting him.

“But he’s just a normal person like us.”

During the sell-out show, Rangers-daft Charly was seated next to Celtic striker Leigh Griffiths.

Charly is now free from leukaemia following a successful bone marrow transplant but still needs to undergo two years of further treatment.

And she’ll be mixing with more celebrities when she catches up with Lewis at the TRNSMT festival in July, where she will meet Rita Ora.

Lewis’s current tour began in the UK and he played Aberdeen last night.

He is due to travel to the US and Canada this spring.
