16-year-olds charged over school blaze

Pair will appear in court today

A PAIR of teenagers have been charged with starting a fire at a school.

The two 16-year-olds have been arrested over wilful fireraisin­g in connection with a blaze at Wester Hailes Education Centre, in Edinburgh, on Friday evening.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service were called to tackle the fire at the centre at 8.04pm.

The fire service said the blaze was located inside a cupboard in the school and left the building “heavily smoke-damaged”.

Fire crews from seven appliances spent four hours at the scene.

No casualties were reported. Yesterday, police announced that the two teenage boys had been charged and were due to appear at Edinburgh Sheriff Court today.

The force said they are still investigat­ing three other incidents which took place in Wester Hailes on Friday evening – another fire and two alleged assaults.
