New controversy follows ‘No surrender’ video revelation

-

BY MARK McGIVERN Chief Reporter surrounds a post from 2011, which refers to a YouTube video about the Rangers debut of former star Mark Walters.

The post, on Graham’s “Meharg Davy” Facebook page, stated: “Nothing changes at the piggery.”

Celtic FC is understood to regard the word as grossly offensive.

A Rangers fan who contacted the Record about the post said he was disgusted that such a high-ranking and influential fan should even think in such a way.

The fan said: “Piggery is a word that is known to be used among the sectarian minority of fans and would never be used by modern and decent-thinking supporters.

“It’s used in a hateful way and the guy running PR shouldn’t be hanging on to such nasty old values.”

In the video that emerged earlier, Graham stated: “The

Union is still here and the Union is still strong because of our fighting spirit.

“It’s very easy as Rangers fans, and it’s very easy as Unionists and Loyalists, to take the flak and lie down but our cry has been, since 1668, and it always will be, ‘No surrender.’”

Despite the video, Graham said in a radio interview that Rangers are open to everyone and there is no reason why they “cannot be a 21st century club for 21st century people”. He added: “The future includes everyone, irrespective of sexual orientation, religious background or cultural affiliation.

“Rangers is proud to be a modern, diverse football club.”

The new PR chief ’s father-inlaw, Michael Herbert, is of the Jewish faith.

The Record contacted Rangers FC and Graham for comment. No one got back to us.

The Facebook page had been deleted last night.
