Only way of stopping the flak is to lift a trophy
RANGERS Miller’s warning for Gers
KENNY MILLER last night insisted Rangers will have to suck up the criticism they’ve taken since the winter break until they finally win a trophy.
The former Ibrox striker reckons Steven Gerrard’s team have nobody but themselves to blame for falling 13 points off the pace, with a game in hand, before the season was suspended due to the coronavirus crisis.
And when the ball starts rolling again Miller – now coaching in Australia with Newcastle Jets – reckons Rangers will have to hit the ground running, even if their title chances look finished.
He said: “If and when the season restarts, it’s going to be a long, long way back. But football’s a funny game. You never know what can happen so they have to regroup and go again.”
Miller reckoned December’s
League Cup final – dominated by Rangers and won by Celtic – illustrated the difference between the clubs right now.
He believes Celtic have the mindset that Rangers had when they were regularly collecting trophies under Walter Smith.
Miller said: “There’s no doubt Celtic have the kind of attitude we had under Walter. We were relentless and we found a way to
win. That’s what Celtic are doing time and again and the League Cup Final was a perfect example.
“Celtic found a way to win. It pains you to say it as a Rangers fan and a former Rangers player but Celtic are relentless and that’s something we had over that spell.
“This Rangers team simply has to break the mould and win a trophy.
“That League Cup final was a great opportunity for them to do so because Rangers were clearly the better team. I don’t think even the Celtic fans will deny that but what they’ll say is, ‘But we came away with the trophy’.
“That’s what good teams do and the current Rangers team will also have it levelled against them that come crunch time they haven’t stood up to the pressure. To be fair they didn’t even get to crunch time.
“It was a capitulation from the word go after coming back from the winter break. I’m sure Steven is scratching his head as well.
“His team looked like potential champions for the first six months of the season.
“Whenever the game restarts in Scotland they have got to be at it from the word go.
“If they aren’t the criticism will remain and it won’t go away until they’ve won a trophy.”
