3 Best wine from the High Street

- with Brian Elliott

2019 The Waterfront Chardonnay £5.99 – instead of £7.99 until April 14 at Waitrose There may be a small splash of viognier in this (predominantly) chardonnay South African white but, either way, it is tasty fare indeed. It has smooth white peach and other tropical fruit flavours that are enlivened by pithy pear drop acidity and supported by a delicate crème brulee texture.

2018 Nivei Rioja Blanco £5.99 at Lidl from Thursday

White Rioja gets mixed reports and the main grape it normally uses (viura) can certainly be variable. However, this white Rioja (part of the Lidl wine promotion that starts next week) is a blend – and contains over twice as much sauvignon blanc as it does viura. Sauvignon gives the wine appealing lime components and good acidity which are nicely supported by touches of quince and orange-influenced depth.

2018 Wine Atlas Feteasca Neagra

£5.25 at Asda I have praised this almost unpronounceable Romanian wine before but it remains one of the best value reds on the High Street. While quite light in texture. it still delivers excellent redcurrant and cherry fruit with good acidity, hints of chocolate and aniseed but pleasingly soft tannin.

ON-WINE SHOPPING

2019 Broken Shackle Classic Red £7.99 at www. strictlywine.co.uk Unsurprisingly, this new vintage Australian red blend is led by shiraz but the classic components that variety offers are reinforced here by a useful portion of merlot and a couple of other less well-known varieties. The resulting cocktail brings us wine with mellow raspberry, bramble and black cherry fruit accompanied by hints of clove, good acidity and subtle tannins but with attractive spice and herb barrel-induced elements.
