CELTIC and Rangers were stunned to be fined by petty UEFA beaks yesterday despite football suffering a global financial meltdown due to the coronavirus crisis.

The Parkhead men were slapped with a £13,300 sanction for kicking off a few minutes late in their Europa League last 32 clash in Copenhagen.

Rangers copped an £8800 fine after a

UEFA issued a further £4800 sanction after a Buckfast bottle was lobbed on to the Ibrox pitch in the last 16 first-leg encounter with Leverkusen last month, where the Light Blues lost 3-1.

Celtic boss Neil Lennon copped a slap on the wrists for the late kick-off as manager are the ones held responsible when teams are behind schedule.

Rangers received those three separate charges from their Europa League showdowns with Braga and Bayern Leverkusen – despite the match with the Germans being in limbo after the first leg.

Both clubs have 90 days to stump up but Rangers could be waiting up to six months to play the return leg against the Germans.

It’s understood Celtic won’t make a fuss over their sanction despite UEFA opting to stick to the letter of the law even during the football crisis across the continent.

The Champions and Europa Leagues have been put on ice, the Euro Championships shelved for a year, domestic campaigns are shut down and clubs are scrambling to work out ways to pay the wage bills.
