Jambo’s our Rambo now in lockdown

- Loony Joons FRASER WILSON

FAIR play to the junior footballer who this week claimed to be following the strictest military workouts to keep fit in lockdown.

Twenty-mile runs on the treadmill and thousands of press-ups? Turns out Rossvale keeper Jamie Donnelly spent the last seven days doing commando crawls in his pyjamas playing Call of Duty on his Xbox.

But while our man Jambo has gone all Rambo, there are others at our grade taking their DIY fitness regimes to barking new levels to please their gaffers. And I don’t mean attaching Fitbits to their dog.

Shotts Bon Accord boss John McKeown said: “Danny Burns and Gerry Watt are sending me daily videos of them doing yoga and pilates. It’s just weird.

“They forget I’m old school, so the rest of the boys are doing runs and circuits.

“I’ve got Josh Watt who lives around the corner running past my window every night and stopping to stretch so I see him.

“Funny, he comes back the other way trying to hide a blue polly bag.”

There’s no doubt motivating yourself to stay fit is an effort. Joe Wicks? More like Screw Fix for the hordes of ageing players trying to keep old joints hanging together.

YouTube tutorials are as much fun as an hour in a room with Charlie Methven from Sunderland ’Til I Die. Almost as painful too.

In all seriousness, the semi-professional player is just as dedicated to fitness as the pros and in some cases more so. You have to be. How else could you cope if all of a sudden the season sprung back into action?

That’s unlikely with the pile-up of games double what the SPFL are sweating over.

Even Darvel boss Mick Kennedy called for the season to be null and void – and they are six points clear in the Championship.

It’s the most logical option with the west region to be restructured in the pyramid.

● The junior game lost a giant this week when much-loved Pollok man Franny McNeill passed away after a short illness.

Franny served Lok as a player, secretary, vice-president and president over four decades and the outpouring of tributes says it all about the love for the man.

“Franny was often heard to say at committee meetings that, ‘The sign above that door says Pollok Football Club and it’s bigger than every one of us,’” said Lok.

“This encapsulates many of the great qualities that Franny possessed – his humility, his endeavour and his belief in the common good.”

Here, here. Rest in peace Franny.
