A SCOT who wrote to Amanda Knox while she was in an Italian prison over the murder of student Meredith Kercher has told how they connected.

Last week, the Record revealed that Knox had admitted in a podcast she had received a letter from a Scottish man while she was in jail in Perugia and had been “touched” by what he had written.

Railway worker Dave Moncoeur, from Edinburgh, penned the letter in 2010 and said he wanted to show support for Knox because of his “feminist” views.

Dave, 65, added: “I believed Amanda’s situation was worsened by a male prejudice factor. I wanted to show her my support so I posted her the letter.”

After hearing Knox say his letter lifted her spirits, Dave said: “It made me feel more justified in supporting her. It feels worth it. I’m glad all the letters did that for her.” In the podcast interview with Motherwell-based Derek Watson, Knox, 33, said: “I received a letter from someone in Scotland and if that person is listening right now, I love you. I need to get to Scotland. I’ve never been to Scotland. I sort of have this expectation of a comfortable and open place.”

Knox was sentenced to 26 years in jail, alongside her boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, for the murder of Meredith in 2007. She served four years in prison before her conviction was overturned in 2011.

Knox returned to the US but in 2014, Italian courts overturned the acquittal and reinstated the guilty verdict.

The case was then passed to the Supreme Court and her conviction was finally overturned in 2015.
