Quenching your first is best feeling you will get

- BY JEREMY CROSS

RYAN GIGGS admits the feeling he had when Manchester United won the Champions League in 2008 wasn’t a patch on his first success in 1999.

United beat Chelsea on penalties in Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium after John Terry’s infamous slip and miss from the spot helped Sir Alex Ferguson land his second Champions League title.

Giggs was part of the United side that claimed a historic treble in 1999, landing the first European Cup crown of his career following the last-gasp comeback win over Bayern Munich in Barcelona.

The United legend admitted the first big win is always the best.

Giggs said: “1999 was the best feeling I’ve ever had. When I grew up a United fan we hadn’t won the league for 26 years. Then we narrowly did it, so the first league win and the European Cup were the two wins I treasure most.

“With the later ones, it was just more satisfying to see some team-mates win it for the first time and you are buzzing off that.

“Just like Moscow in 2008, you’d see Rooney and Ronaldo, all these players who’d never won it before, you’d be buzzing for them as well as yourself.

“The first time you win the league and Champions League it’s all about you, but then with the later ones it’s a different feeling.

“You try to enjoy it because it could be your last but it’s just different.

“You remember that feeling you had, that they have now got. Until you win that first one, you always have a doubt in your mind ‘am I ever going to win it’, especially if you’ve come close a few times.”
