TWO police officers were badly injured when they were allegedly attacked with a meat cleaver.

The PCs, aged 24 and 23, were taken to hospital – one with a hand wound and the other with a head injury.

The officers were praised for their bravery during the incident in broad daylight in Cambusnethan, Lanarkshire.

TWO police officers were left seriously injured following an alleged meat cleaver attack in broad daylight.

The officers were returning a 10-year-old boy to an address in Cambusnethan, near Wishaw, Lanarkshire, before the incident on Sunday evening.

They were said to have been approached by a man who was armed with the large bladed weapon.

After an altercation, one constable, aged 24, suffered a serious hand injury while his colleague, 23, sustained a serious head injury.

Both men were taken to University Hospital Wishaw following the incident.

The 23-year-old was released yesterday while his colleague remained in hospital awaiting surgery for his hand injuries.

Police said a 25-year-old man was charged in connection with the incident and is due at Hamilton Sheriff Court today.

The officers were hailed for their bravery by local area commander Chief Inspector Mark Leonard.

He said: “Both officers were simply doing their job and suddenly found themselves dealing with an incident that was completely unexpected.

“Every police officer knows the circumstances of every incident they attend could change quickly and they are well trained to deal with this.

“The reality requires a great amount of alertness, professionalism and bravery. I’d like to praise them for that.

“I have spoken to both officers to wish them a speedy recovery and passed on best wishes from everyone in the division.”
