Davidson’s set to be named new Saints boss
CALLUM DAVIDSON is set to become the new St Johnstone manager.
The Perth club confirmed last night that talks were at an advanced stage with their former player and assistant manager.
Davidson, 43, will succeed Tommy Wright who stepped down as manager after the season was prematurely ended by the pandemic.
Saints moved for Davidson after agreeing compensation with Millwall, where he was No.2 to Gary Rowett.
A Saints statement last night said: “The club can confirm an agreement has been reached with Millwall and we have been granted permission to discuss personal terms with Davidson regarding the vacant managerial post at McDiarmid Park.
“Discussions with Callum are now at an advanced stage with a view to the 43-year-old taking over from current caretaker boss Alec Cleland.
“Callum started his professional career at McDiarmid Park before making the move south of the border to Blackburn Rovers for £1.75million – a fee which remains a club record to this day.
“He returned towards the end of his playing career in May 2011 before taking his first steps into coaching as assistant to former boss Wright.”
Davidson has since been assistant to Rowett at Stoke and Millwall and first-team coach with Dunfermline.
The books were closed on Davidson’s appointment after a string of bets from the English capital yesterday morning.
He is expected to work with the existing backroom staff of Cleland, Alan Maybury and Paul Mathers.
