BOY, 3, IS KILLED BY CAR ON PAVEMENT

BY ANDY SHIPLEY AND KIRSTY FEERICK A THREE-YEAR-OLD boy died in hospital last night hours after being hit by a car in the street.

Horrified witnesses say a red Kia hatchback mounted the pavement in Edinburgh’s Morningsid­e moments before the crash yesterday.

The child was said to have been trapped by the vehicle. A woman, believed to be the boy’s mother, was also injured in the incident.

It happened outside St Columba’s Hospice charity shop in Morningsid­e Road at about 2.30pm.

Police confirmed last night that the boy had died following the incident on Morningsid­e Road.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: “We can confirm that a three-year-old boy has died following a road traffic crash in Edinburgh.

“The collision, on Morningsid­e Road, involved a red Kia motor car and two pedestrian­s.

“As a result, a 37-year-old woman and a three-year-old boy were taken to hospital, where a few doors up from the crash scene. She said: “I was working in the shop and heard a noise, a bang. I came out and there were a lot of people around and some were taking pictures.

“I didn’t go too close because it was scary and I didn’t want to see any injured people.

“My customer phoned an ambulance and I went back into the shop. It was shocking. ”

Another other witness said: “This poor lad was stuck under the car.”

Inspector Roger Park, of Edinburgh’s road policing unit, said: “The heartfelt thoughts of my colleagues and I are with the families involved in this tragic incident.

“Our inquiries will continue to establish the full circumstan­ces of the collision. I would ask that anyone who witnessed the incident or may have dashcam or CCTV footage and has so far not spoken to the police to contact us on 101 quoting incident number 1798 of 30/06/2020.”
