REDS WON FOR STEVIE G
Liverpool skipper in title tribute
LIVERPOOL skipper Jordan Henderson last night hailed Steven Gerrard and told the Rangers boss: ‘This title’s for you’.
The Kop star revealed it became a personal mission to win the Premier League
for the man who wore the Anfield armband before him.
And he revealed that one of the first calls he made after the Reds were crowned champions for the first time in 30 years, was to old teammate and close friend Gerrard, whose slip cost the Reds the 2014 title.
Boss Jurgen Klopp has already praised the role Gerrard – voted the club’s greatest-ever player in a national radio poll this week – played in paving the way for the success.
And Henderson followed him as he said: “This one is quite personal for me and definitely to do it for Stevie is quite big - I know how much it would mean to him.
“I was devastated in 2014 that we couldn’t get over the line for him but I know he will be so happy and so proud of this team to be able to bring the Premier League trophy to Liverpool and, yes, to do it for him is big.”
Meanwhile, Peter Lovenkrands has left Rangers.
Sporting director Ross Wilson announced an academy reshuffle which saw Graeme Murty appointed Gers’ head of elite development.
Kevin Thomson and Brian Gilmour will replace Lovenkrands while former Gers star Steven Smith takes up a coaching role.
A club statement on Dane Lovenkrands’ exit: said: “Peter is leaving the club to pursue his career elsewhere and we wish him every success.”
