Crypt ‘ghouls’ give us creeps

Groups under fire for sneaking into tombs and taking pics of remains

- BY SALLY HIND

A GROUP of “ghouls” have been blasted for filming skeletal remains while creeping around an abandoned crypt and posting images online.

The eerie footage and pictures appeared on a social media group for those with a fascination for exploring abandoned spaces yesterday.

But enthusiasts criticised the move – branding the pictures “distasteful” and “disgusting”.

The Record is not sharing the location of the building in southwest Scotland, which sits in overgrown woodland and has an underground catacomb.

But the footage – shared on a Facebook page with almost 7000 followers – shows a group of three people entering the derelict building with cameras through an open door and descending into the crypt through a hole in the floor.

Once inside, they filmed rows of coffins in the darkness before zooming in on a skull on top of a disintegrated coffin.

The camera then pans to another coffin with its lid ajar to reveal more skeletal remains.

One woman commented on the post: “Absolutely disgusted that people think it’s OK to be wandering around in crypt with exposed remains. How would you feel if it was your mum or gran’s body that idiots were filming and moving about and thinking it’s OK to post on social media?

“Exploring old buildings is one thing but this takes it to an extremely sick and disgusting level.”

Another member of the group said: “We should leave these people to rest now. These bones were a person too we must remember that and treat with respect.”

While one explorer added: “I get the fact you’re exploring. I’m all for that but as soon as you saw someone’s family members remains out of the coffin that was your cue to f**k off.”

Other upset members called for the site to be secured or the remains to be laid to rest in another location. One said: “Very ghoulish. Bones should be reinterred and left alone.” Another added: “You know me, I’m up for anything but this is distasteful. It should be boarded back up.”

One of the members asked: “Should the remains not be taken away and laid to rest somewhere safe?”

But some enthusiasts did not appear to be offended by the pictures. One said: “I can’t believe you managed to get in. When I went, I felt uneasy. Never managed to get in though.”

Another said: “This looks incredible. Amazing photography.”

One of the explorers who posted the images, argued that they were right to be in the crypt.

He wrote on Facebook: “So should the Paris catacombs be shut off to the public?

“We didn’t do anything wrong and were very respectful of our surroundings.”

There is no suggestion the group committed an offence by entering the crypt.
