Shop workers fear face mask attacks

-

POLICE are to ensure the public comply with new face covering laws at shops and other businesses from today.

But there is growing concern over the welfare of retail staff amid evidence that violence and threats against them have doubled since lockdown began.

It is feared staff will be targeted if they ask customers to wear protection for public health as well as their own safety.

The new law makes it a criminal offence for someone not to wear a face covering inside a shop or other outlet such as a hair salon.

Children under five are exempt along with anyone who has a health condition.

Only the police have the power to enforce the measure, although they say they will use enforcement as a ”last resort”.

Police Scotland Assistant Chief Constable Gary Ritchie said: “Our officers will continue to engage with the public, explain the legislation and guidance and encourage compliance.”

But the mask move has sparked fears that retail staff could find themselves in the firing line.

Stewart Forrest, Scottish divisional officer for the union

Usdaw, said: “Our big concern is who enforces mandatory face coverings and we made that clear to the Scottish Government.

“Shop workers are worried they will be expected to turn people away from the store because they do not have a face covering or it is not being worn properly.

“Incidents of abuse against shop workers have already doubled through the coronavirus emergency and this would be yet another flashpoint.”

And industry sources say there are weaknesses in the new law.

One said: “The police cannot be everywhere all of the time.”
