EVERCADE: HANDHELD RETRO ARCADE ◆◆◆◆◆

- STEPHEN McKEOWN

RETRO gaming has been an ever-present part of our playing lives, whether it be backward compatibility on our current gen consoles or re-release of console minis to entice the new gamer to the old 8-bit and 16-bit titles.

Now, thanks to the guys at Blaze Entertainment, you can go back in time to the days of Atari 2600, or more recently and grab hold of your own favourite retro titles and play them on the move with the Evercade.

Evercade is a hand-held piece of brilliance that takes you back to the heady days of the 80s Game Boy and 90s Game Gear, when you felt like a king while playing your games and changing your cartridges.

Only this time you can have your pick of a vast library of games. Games come in multi-title cartridges linked to a developer from yesteryear, such as Atari, or Interplay and Data East with some great memories such as Super Double Dragon, Pac Man and even Asteroids.

The hardware itself sports a clear and crisp 4.3in display that looks

great and the overall design of the handheld is comfortable in grip as well as feeling solid in its build.

The buttons feel as responsive as any current gen console controller.

The d-pad is bigger compared with its modern counterparts but moves well and helps massively with the 360-degree motion needed for a lot of these games. As with most recent retro console releases, the Evercade can be linked via HDMI to your television to provide you with a full screen 720p output – which with these games is more than enough.

Often audio quality suffers but Blaze have managed to get it spot on with most if not all the titles I played (and there were a lot).

It felt great opening cartridge boxes and reading manuals again, which are beautifully designed as are the boxes themselves.

The unit feels great and, at £59.99, the console is very affordable as well. Game on!
