SAM SAYS NO TO £2M TRANSFER

- BY SCOTT BURNS

ABERDEEN top scorer Sam Cosgrove last night knocked back a £2million move to French outfit Guingamp. The Ligue 2 side tried to land the Dons’ super striker ahead of the French signing deadline yesterday.

The Reds and Guingamp were in talks over a fee and Cosgrove was granted permission to open talks. The problem for the 23-year-old is that he was only given 24 hours to

make up his mind before the signing deadline in France passed.

Cosgrove wanted more time to weigh up his options.

He wasn’t 100 percent convinced on the move to the second tier of French football and decided he’d rather remain at Aberdeen.

Guingamp could yet resurrect their interest when their window re-opens in a month’s time but it seems unlikely Cosgrove’s position will change.

The prolific hitman still has strong interest from England where Stoke and Middlesbrough have had him watched.

He was also approached to sign by Red Bull New York in the last window.

Cosgrove, who still has two years left on his contract, is happy to remain at Pittodrie and continue building his reputation.

The big Englishman was Aberdeen’s top scorer with 23 goals last season on the back of the 21 he netted the previous campaign.

Meanwhile, Dave Cormack has claimed having Aberdeen’s opener against Rangers behind closed doors will cost his club £400,000.

The Dons estimate that the Covid-19 lockdown and limited restart will see the club lose around £10million.

Chairman Cormack is believed to have covered half of that but is putting the final part of his survival plan in place.

He has admitted a no-fan and social distancing return will cost the club and he confirmed the opening day Pittodrie clash will leave a substantial six-figure hole.

Cormack tweeted: “Next week we’ll update Dons fans on the club’s cash flow projections for season 20/21. An example of the reality we face is an income loss of £400,000 with the Rangers game being played behind closed doors.

“We’re determined to avoid staff redundancies and entertain our fans.”
