Air-raising plan could save Venice
VENICE has conducted a trial run of an anti-flood system made from 78 inflatable barriers in the hope of protecting the city from devastating high tides.
Italian premier Giuseppe Conte pressed a button that activated compressors to pump air into the barriers, which then started rising from the sea.
The project, which is 10 years behind schedule, is named Moses after the Biblical figure who parted the Red Sea.
Conte said it was designed to safeguard Venice’s “marvellous architectural, artistic and historical heritage”.
