Scotland ace drove at ‘idiotic’ speed while over drink limit

-

SCOTLAND football star Oli McBurnie has admitted drink-driving after police caught him doing “idiotic” speeds in his high-powered Audi A8.

The £20million Sheffield United striker initially denied the offence.

He said he’d only had one drink but yesterday he changed his plea at the last minute.

BY LUCY THORNTON McBurnie was fined almost £30,000 – less than two weeks’ wages – by a district judge sitting at Leeds magistrates’ court.

He was also given a 16-month driving ban.

The Scotland international was caught by officers driving “like an idiot” in the early hours of October 18 near

Selby in Yorkshire. The court heard he’d popped out to a garage to buy cigarettes for a pal.

Prosecutor Philip Morris told the court: “Officers noted that he drove off at speed. In fact, he drove off at considerable speed. There was a 20mph limit and he was grossly in excess of that.”

McBurnie was stopped near his home in Garforth and later breathalysed at a police station, where he was found to be one-and-a-half times over the drink-drive limit.

The 24-year-old, who earns £20,000 a week, was ordered to pay a £29,301 fine.

McBurnie’s lawyer John Dye told the court: “It’s real stupidity that put him in this place but he is genuinely sorry.”
