Leigh has let down Lenny.. Celtic’s stars will be furious

Record columnist says striker let his focus and fitness slip during lockdown

- BY MICHAEL GANNON

CHRIS SUTTON has accused Leigh Griffiths of letting down Neil Lennon with his lack of professionalism in lockdown.

Hitman Griffiths has been left behind at Lennoxtown to work on his fitness while the squad head to France to take on Lyon, Nice and PSG in friendlies. Boss Lennon is understood to

FROM BACK PAGE be furious with the frontman’s condition and has ordered him to get up to speed at home.

Parkhead legend Sutton has hailed Griffiths for overcoming off-field issues to play a starring role last term.

But he insists the striker has let the side down by letting his fitness slide during the shutdown.

Sutton said: “Everyone knows the hard yards you need to go through in lockdown – there are no excuses. They would all have had programmes.

“It’s just stupid. Neil Lennon will feel let down. If I was a team-mate I’d feel hacked off.

“Griffiths got a lot of credit the way he came back from his problems and rightly so.

“To have fitness issues at this stage though is just unprofessional.”

Griffiths vowed to prove the doubters wrong again last night in an Instagram post as he wrote: “So many knockdowns. I’ll rise up and keep challenging those who doubt.”

Sutton reckons Lennon’s patience will be wearing thin but said: “It wouldn’t surprise me if he managed to get Griffiths back to a level again.

“He has to work his backside off. Griffiths has to be careful. Celtic spent a lot of money on Patryk Klimala and at some point he will get opportunities.

“There is Vakoun Bayo there as well.

“If there are doubts about the fitness of Griffiths though, Lennon will be thinking about buying a striker.”
