But United fans will be disappoint­ed Robbie left after winning the league so well last season.

“A change of manager can be unsettling but it can also be a good thing and the fact it has happened early is at least a positive because he has time to get down to work.

“When we returned to the Premier League in 1996 our managerial change came during the season when Billy Kirkwood paid the price for us not starting the season as well as we could have.

“Billy was a good coach and manager but Tommy McLean was poached from Raith Rovers with his brother Jim obviously chairman. He was great for the club and for me.”

Perry was a £3000 signing from Cove as a youngster and ended his playing days at Balmoral Stadium.

Now he’s set to join fans on a fundraisin­g walk to raise cash in their legal fight to stop their promotions being blocked by Hearts and Partick Thistle.

Perry said: “I loved my time at Tannadice but the chance to return home was too strong. I’m working in the University of Aberdeen in the library where I’ve been since I finished full-time football 19 years ago.”
