Wilder demands tougher penalties for racist trolls

-

CHRIS WILDER insists there must be a “severe price to pay” for online trolls after the racist abuse suffered by David McGoldrick.

The Sheffield United striker was targeted hours after scoring the first two Premier League goals of his career in a 3-0 win over Chelsea.

McGoldrick, 32, posted a screenshot of the vile message he received on Instagram – which included the ‘n’ word and “ape” – with the Blades working with the police and football’s authorities to find and take action against the person responsible.

Wilder said: “It’s incredible. Not just the timing, from a personal point of view for David, but it’s incredible these things still happen.

“It needs to be dealt with severely, as severely as we can do, to eradicate all of this. The severest of punishments needs to be handed out to these people.

“People talk about education, and I’m a big believer in that but there has to be a price to pay for the people who do this.

“Maybe it’s a little bit extreme, what I’d like to happen, so I’ll leave those opinions to myself.”

Wilder acknowledged the role social media plays but tells his players on a daily basis to be aware of its many downsides.

He said: “Every day, every month and every year, but they have their brand and it’s part and parcel of the world now.

“A lot of good things come from it but it comes with its demons and the ones we’re seeing now are not good for anyone.”

VETERAN stopper Steven Anderson has joined Forfar on a two-year deal.

The 34-year-old moves to Station Park after his release from St Johnstone, whom he joined back in 2004.

The Saints legend spent most of last season on-loan at Raith Rovers.
