SAM’S WORTH LOT MORE THAN £2M

Miller says Reds hitman’s worth more than £2m

- BY SCOTT BURNS

WILLIE MILLER fears Aberdeen will have shortchanged themselves when it eventually comes to selling Sam Cosgrove.

The Dons accepted a £2million offer with add-ons from Guingamp last week but their top scorer knocked back a move to the French second tier.

Pittodrie legend Miller thinks Cosgrove could be worth a lot more – but English clubs are likely to bid the same value as Guingamp knowing that an offer has already been accepted.

Miller said: “It’s great news for Aberdeen Cosgrove rejected a move to France.

“However, the Dons accepting a bid from Guingamp puts down a marker to other clubs.

“For the moment the positive thing is he’s staying put at Pittodrie.

“I wouldn’t like to look back at last season and work out how many points his goals earned the Dons.

“The Reds were so reliant on the Englishman for so much of last term it would have been a massive blow to lose him. I know Cosgrove will need to be replaced at some point but it would have given Derek McInnes a major headache if he had to find a replacement during the current situation.

“I was surprised Aberdeen accepted a bid of around £2m, particularly as they turned down £6.5m from Aston Villa for Scott McKenna two years ago.

“Clubs in England seeing the bid that was accepted for Cosgrove may be keen to take a chance and put in a similar offer to see if the deal can be done.

“That may be the case not just with Cosgrove but McKenna and Lewis Ferguson. If Aberdeen were to lose any of them it’d be a huge blow.”

Miller also thinks it would be a different ball game if a decent English club did come calling for Cosgrove.

He said: “If bids are accepted from English teams there’s every chance the player may fancy the move.”

Miller accepts the Covid-19 crisis is causing teams undue financial stress and with chairman Dave Cormack trying to plug a £10m gap that might well have forced him to accept Guingamp’s bid.

He added: “I can fully understand the financial situation Aberdeen are in and the need to bring in some cash.

“However, the supporters have heard Cormack say players won’t be sold on the cheap so to see a bid of around £2m being accepted for Cosgrove sends a strange message.

“I’d hope Cormack will fight strongly to keep these players at Pittodrie but I can understand why bids may be accepted because of the impact the pandemic’s had.”
