Winter is coming
Can 10 solo adventurers manage to last 100 days in wilds of the Arctic?
‘No food, extremely cold conditions – I’m expecting my worst nightmare’ Alone contestant
Attacked by predators. Mental breakdown. Medical emergency. Starvation. Loneliness.
These are some of the reasons why previous contestants have had to quit the terrifyingly tough TV survival competition Alone.
Having been abandoned in some insanely remote and savage locations, like Patagonia and Northern Mongolia, each person must try to endure – stay alive in – the harsh environment for as long as possible, armed only with limited kit and some camera equipment to record their ordeal.
This time, however, the stakes are even higher and the terrain even harsher. Our 10 new intrepid explorers are left on the edge of the Arctic, in the
Canadian Northwest Territories, to see who can last, all on their own, for nearly three months. Just as winter is about to set in. Pride aside, however, there is a massive incentive to make it - a prize of $1million. Some of the contestants’ statements as they approach this seemingly impossible challenge are declared with a bravado, determination and enthusiasm for what lies ahead.
“No food, extremely cold conditions – I’m expecting my worst nightmare.”
“You can get hurt so bad – one injury and that’s it.” “It can get down to minus 40 degrees.” “It’s more a competition with yourself than with the others.” Us mere mortals simply can’t imagine.
Though these eight men and two women aren’t normal civilians.
Each of them is already a hardcore superhuman, whether it’s wilderness survival school owner Joel, winter expedition leader Kielyn, bushcraft expert Shawn or extreme hunter Roland. They’re used to living off the land, hunting for food and fending off deadly animals of prey.
Think braving up to hungry bears, battling killer elements and munching on ants for breakfast. “You have to eat their heads first otherwise they’ll pinch your tongue,” according to Roland.
So, who will be the last man or woman standing and who will end up lying down in a rescue helicopter with a flask of tea and a bacon sandwich?
And are they heroes or fools in the first place? That bit you can decide from the comfort of your own sofa.
