VIGURS: WE’RE ALL CAPTAINS ON THE PITCH

-

IAIN VIGURS is relishing his role as captain of Ross County after coming to terms with being a thirtysomething footballer in the twilight of his career.

The Staggies midfielder, 32, has been hailed by boss Stuart Kettlewell as an inspirational figure.

But Vigurs revealed his first task as father of the dressing room will be to tell his younger teammates to make sure their time in football doesn’t end with regrets.

He said: “You look at things a different way when you hit 30 and think things are starting to come to an end.

“You look at what you should and could’ve done and what you actually did. But isn’t that the same for everyone in all walks of life?

“I’ve always been a believer you should never live with any regrets. I maybe made a couple of decisions I shouldn’t have.

“Now I’m a captain I need to show younger players how to lead by example. But a lot of our boys have good heads on their shoulders. I can’t see them making too many bad choices in their careers.

“But if I can help them in any way I’m more than happy to do that. I want to

BY GORDON PARKS do the right things on the park so they can follow suit.”

Vigurs had two spells at Inverness as well as a stint at Elgin but is now enjoying a return to County where he spent four years earlier in his career.

The playmaker admits being named skipper is a confidence booster but hopes to have 10 other leaders at his back when he takes the team out.

He said: “It’s a real honour and one I definitely couldn’t turn down.

“I’ve known for the last couple of weeks. The gaffer pulled me aside one day and we had the chat.

“Earlier in my career I couldn’t have imagined being handed this leadership role. I’d like to think I know the game a lot better than I did when I was younger and first time around at County.

“I’d like to think I can excel in this role. First and foremost a captain needs to lead by example and also has to encourage people around them.

“But I’ve always believed when you cross that white line everyone needs to be a captain. We need to bring a winning mentality back to the Highlands.”
