My £10million Striptease has paid off for women in Hollywood
1932 novel, Demi plays Linda, a woman banished from her privileged life having accidentally fallen pregnant in a society where citizens are created artificially. Linda has raised her son John, played by Solo star Alden Ehrenreich, outside the World State in a disregarded society where people think nothing of the promiscuous attitude to sex to the point where they even get down to it in the town square. Never shy of a steamy scene or two, today Demi reveals how she’s enjoyed watching rather than partaking in much of Brave New World’s rudeness.
She said: “I didn’t get to see any of that being filmed but in watching it on screen, just the choreography of the movement of it is amazing.”
While it was written 88 years ago, Demi is eager to point out the show is not aiming to titillate but to tell a deep and meaningful story that, while sci-fi, is relevant to reality.
She said: “We can learn not be afraid to make mistakes because those are the things that make us strong and dynamic.
“When you exist in a world where it is all winning, it’s boring. Learning from your mistakes and losing... I think that is beautiful.” Certainly, Demi has had a turbulent life. Her biological dad left her mum before Demi was born. She revealed last year she was raped at 15 by a man who claimed he’d paid Demi’s mum to get access to her. At 16, she’d moved out, posed nude for an adult magazine – claiming she was 18 – and made her film debut in 1981’s Choices, which led to her joining US soap General Hospital. In the 80s, she found fame in the Brat Pack before superstardom in the 90s.
But after Striptease, her career never recovered.
Playing a mother in Brave New World dedicated to her child resonated with Demi, who has been making the most of the quality time afforded to her by lockdown.
She said: “It’s been a great opportunity to work on stuff with my daughters because stuff is definitely going to come up when you’re all this close together for so long .
“We’ve been together and that is really the gift and the challenge.”
But there were raised eyebrows when she went into lockdown at her Idaho home with ex Bruce, his wife Emma Heming and their two daughters Mabel, eight, and Evelyn, six. Demi and Bruce’s daughter’s partners were also part of the mix.
It was the epitome of a blended family.
Demi is proud of the relationship she has created with Bruce and added: “I think that happiness can only come from within.”
