IT’S taken more than 50 years but now there’s a female skipper at the helm of Birds Eye Fish Fingers for the first time.

Today we salute the new Captain – foster carer Charlotte Carter-Dunn, who is replacing the silver bearded skipper, albeit temporaril­y.

Not only will she be on tens of thousands of packs exclusive to frozen food chain Iceland after winning a competitio­n, today the new Captain Birds Eye shares her money and foodsaving ideas with Cash Queens readers.

Charlotte was chosen for the role from hundreds of hopefuls after Birds Eye and Iceland cast their net wide to find a savvy shopper with the best tips for cutting food bills and using frozen food.

The 24-year-old winner from Gloucester – who cares for two foster children aged three and four – told us: “Simple hacks and swaps can save you a whole lot of money and also help when it comes to reducing your food waste.

“I always make sure my freezer and store cupboards are in a simple date order. That way I can quickly check what I’ve got in before heading to the supermarke­ts.

“This allows you to see exactly what needs using up first and what you need to buy, so it results in a shop that you’ll actually need.

“In my freezer, I always have an addon drawer which is packed with frozen veg and fruit.

“Knowing this is full and ready to use allows me to be prepared throughout the whole week. And it means that I can create nutritious Charlotte won contest to meals for my family. be first female Captain “I freeze any leftovers from meals and at the end of the month, I make ‘iffits’ for dinner – if it’s there, eat it.

“This means saving money, reducing food waste and making more room in my freezer for the next shop.

“My freezer has been even more of a godsend during lockdown as it’s enabled us to reduce our shopping trips.

“I hope that sharing my frozen hacks will help other families get the most out of their freezer.”
