Connolly hails progress under new gaffer as Arabs plot new chapter

- BY CRAIG SWAN

MARK CONNOLLY has joined Micky Mellon in laying foundations to help Dundee United return to the higher echelons of the game.

United have made a splendid start on their top-flight return with their display in defeat by Celtic another shining example of progress under the new boss.

Mellon got it spot-on tactically while his encouragement and constant instructions invigorated his young troops to go toe-to-toe for spells with the champions.

Off the park, the new manager is also planting seeds. Every department of the footballing set-up is being scrutinised to eke out improvement as the Tannadice side aim to once again live up to their big-club status.

Connolly said: “I don’t think he really needs to shout at us. We have a really good group of good honest boys who want to do well for this club, who committed themselves to contracts and moved to the city. We’re buying into what the club is doing.

“The manager can see what we have. We have an honest group of players but technically good players. We are trying to pass the ball and play.

“The manager isn’t being negative, he is being positive. You can see that on the pitch.

“We are giving our absolute all for this club. As a team we are working hard for each other. The way last season finished in the Championship was disappointing. We wanted to win the league with all the games played.

“We had to show in our mindset how we wanted to come back and start this season. People had written us off before it even started.

“We’ve only played four or five games but we are disappointed we didn’t get something out of every single game. “We deserved at least a point in the Hibs game, again on Saturday, we deserved something out of the game.

“We’ve got a manager with the right work ethic that sees a lot of young boys wanting to do well.

“Lewis Neilson has just turned 17, Jamie Robson is a young player, Logan Chalmers, Luke Bolton as well, we have young boys all over the pitch who want to work hard. “We are a big club, one of the biggest clubs in Scotland. The manager’s not saying it for the sake of it but because it’s right.”
