Iguanas head for the ocean, while seals hunt below the waves

BBC1, 8pm HOW we’ve missed Sir David Attenborough’s soothing voice. As soon as he speaks it makes you feel everything will be alright – and we need that now more than ever.

So let’s thank the Beeb for bringing us this Planet Earth special event, which sees some of the most extraordinary sequences from Planet Earth II and Blue Planet II, all set to a score by composer Hans Zimmer, and performed by the BBC Concert Orchestra with Brit Award and Mercury Prize-winning rapper Dave.

Sir David’s narration reminds us of the natural world’s amazing and inspiring ability to cope with change and to survive and thrive in incredibly tough conditions.

The stunning and jaw-dropping scenes featured in this truly beautiful special include orca whales hunting herring in the Arctic Circle, and giant trevally fish leaping to catch fledgling terns in the Indian Ocean.

Then there are rare and elusive snow leopards in the Himalayas, flamingos in the Andes, a desperate lion pride hunting giraffe in the Namib desert, and a seriously clever octopus evading capture in an Atlantic kelp forest off the coast of South Africa, while bottlenose dolphins surf and play in the colossal waves above.

There’s also pretty much the most dramatic and tense chase scene ever captured on film.

Forget The Fast and the Furious or Mission Impossible.

It’s all about those baby marine iguanas hatching from the sand and trying to make their way to the ocean, while being pursued by hundreds of slithery, speedy

racer snakes.
