We can grab a bargain thanks to English wage cap says Micky

-

MICKY MELLON is showing patience in the transfer market because he knows the incoming wage caps in the EFL could push more top players towards Scotland.

The Dundee United boss is aiming to strengthen his front and wide areas, with Ipswich’s James Norwood wanted.

Some of the targets are on big wages but Mellon thinks clubs down south will be more than willing to do deals when the wage caps come in.

He said: “At the minute my thinking is the wage cap in League One and League Two will help us financially because we don’t have the cap.

“But you still have to get the player to want to come north.

“From where we’re sitting right now it looks as though it may help Scottish clubs because we don’t have the same restrictions.

“Maybe that will make us a bit more competitive but until we see it properly we won’t know for sure.”

Some of the United support have been frustrated by the lack of movement. But Mellon is not overly concerned and it has given him time to give some of their talented kids, like Lewis Neilson, Chris Mochrie and Louis Appere more invaluable game time.

He added: “We monitor players and games all the time – that doesn’t ever change. “We want to push and probe on recruitment all the time. I don’t think there is a hotspot for recruitment apart from when the window shuts. It’s an ongoing process.

“The work is always being done in the background and you just have to be ready to go when something you like pops up.”

Mellon has invited former Rochdale midfielder Florent Hoti back for another trial.

The United boss said: “I haven’t had a chance to see him but the reports have been good. So we’re going to get him tested for my group this week and that will let me have a decent look at him.”
