Jon can be the 1 for Scots

-

RANGERS stalwart Ryan Jack has tipped Ibrox keeper Jon McLaughlin to cap a dream start to the season by getting his hands on the Scotland No.1 shirt too.

McLaughlin has muscled his way past Allan McGregor into Steven Gerrard’s starting 11 as the league leaders have clocked up six straight top-flight shutouts, matching a record set by Celtic 114 years ago.

And now the 32-year-old could be in line to oust Derby new boy David Marshall – who has been out of action since the coronavirus lockdown – as Steve Clarke’s first choice for the Nations League openers against Israel and the Czech Republic.

And Jack believes his Ibrox team-mate is now ready to make himself a national hero.

He said: “Yeah, I would say so. Jon has been excellent. Greegsy had a knock and that is how Jon has got his chance and he has been excellent.

“I had been in squads before with Jon so I knew what he was capable of and I am sure he’ll be pushing and trying to be No.1.

“But David Marshall’s been a very strong goalie over the years and I’m sure he will want to hold on to the jersey.

“It is tough competition all over the pitch and that is the way it should be at international level.

“Obviously David has not played for a while but I don’t know if it really affects goalkeepers that much.

“The only thing I can say is that I have played with both internationally and now Jon at club level and they are both top, top players. I am sure they will both be fighting to get the No.1 spot.”
