Fly on the wall..

-

AAH, that famous wall. The one Donald Trump kept banging on about on his 2016 campaign trail, that Mexico was going to pay for.

For many people, all they might know about this border is his damaging rhetoric, tales of drug cartels and smuggling, or desperate migrants trying to cross into the US in hopes of their own shot at the American dream.

But there’s a lot more to life in the towns and cities of both sides of this 2000-mile stretch of land, as Sue Perkins is going to show us.

Travelling from the west coast, starting in the Mexican city of Tijuana, she’s making the whole journey across country to the northeastern border city of Matamoros.

And she makes a brilliant travelling companion, openminded and interested in everyone she meets, and determined to drink every drop of the experience dry.

Starting, appropriately, by sampling a whole load of tequila and finding out why Tijuana has its reputation as a party town.

The next day she sees an entirely different side as she helps a group of

Honduran volunteers who are building a hostel for fellow refugees fleeing violence in their country.

As she travels east, she meets people living on both sides – ranchers who’ve seen their livelihoods damaged by immigration, an Arizona sheriff who shows her what people go through to cross the border, and the American retirees who’ve chosen to settle south of the border and live it up at a much more affordable price.
