Toony: We’d love fans to be back and urging us on

-

GREGOR TOWNSEND is desperate for supporters to be allowed back into Murrayfield in time for the autumn internationals.

Scotland host Georgia in a friendly and take on both France and Fiji at home in rugby’s inaugural Autumn Nations Cup.

The Scots also face Wales away in the delayed Six Nations and travel to Italy for the cup opener.

Murrayf ield hosted around 700 supporters in a trial event at last month’s Edinburgh-Glasgow clash and won praise from the Scotland’s clinical director Professor Jason Leitch.

Townsend said: “Let’s hope we’re able to have supporters at our games at BT Murrayfield, I know they love that experience.

“But also our players love the energy our supporters create and have created over the past two or three years.” ICE HOCKEY: The Elite League will meet today to cancel the 2020-21 season.

It’s the first professional league from any sport in the UK to mothball an entire campaign because of the Covid crisis.

Scots legend Colin Shields, a title winner with Belfast Giants who retired in 2019, said: “We’re not like other sports where we can play behind closed doors.

“There’s no TV deal that pays the sort of money that would keep everything going.” ATHLETICS: Jake Wightman rounds off his impressive season over 800 metres at tonight’s Continental Tour leg in Zagreb.

The Scot, who heads the European rankings after last week’s win in Ostrava, believes dealing with travel amid pandemic challenges was better than opting out.

He said: “A year is a long time without being on a track. You do lose race sharpness and it takes a while to get back. I’m hoping all this benefits me.”

Also in Zagreb, Kirsty Law takes on Olympic champion and home hero Sandra Perkovic in the discus.
