Gold flan of Hoy

Peter makes edible bust of Olympic cycle hero

- BY JENNY MORRISON

SIR Chris Hoy has had a cake made in his honour by a Scots Bake Off contestant.

The cycling hero won six Olympic gold medals and 11 world titles in an incredible career.

IT MIGHT just be the cherry on top of Olympian Sir Chris Hoy’s career.

Scottish Bake Off contestant Peter Sawkins has honoured his cycling hero by making a cake of him on the hit show.

Judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith asked the 12 bakers on the new series of The Great British Bake Off to express their creativity by designing a 3D edible bust of their favourite celebrity.

And Edinburgh student Peter, 20, went for the cream of the crop by choosing six-times Olympic winner and 11-times world champion Sir Chris.

Peter, who grew up in the same city as Sir Chris, designed a Victoria sponge that showed him dressed in a fondant Team GB cycling top, goggles and helmet.

He joked: “I was not great at sculpture in art, so I thought I’d go more simple.” His efforts won the praise of both the show’s baking judges. Prue said: “It’s very dramatic. “He’s got wonderful athlete’s shoulders. It looks like he’s puffing and I love the helmet.” And Paul

Hollywood, said: “That’s a clever way of getting round doing hair.”

Hosts Noel Fielding and Matt Lucas kicked off the new series with Cake Week.

In the first round the bakers were asked to put their twist on the classic Battenberg cake, while in round two they had to turn out a fruit sponge.

The first episode of the show airs on Channel 4 tonight at 8pm.
