DEATH IN CUSTODY MAN ON KNIFE RAP
Police find victim’s body in his cell hours before he was due in court
A MAN who died in police custody had been charged with stabbing another man a day earlier.
Marc Hamilton, 36, was found dead in his cell by officers at Kirkcaldy police station at about 10.30am on Friday.
He was due to appear in court that day after allegedly stabbing someone on Thursday.
Police Scotland confirmed Hamilton died after being held in custody overnight.
Hamilton, from Kirkcaldy, was arrested and charged following an incident in Dunearn Drive at about 2.55pm on Thursday when a 40-year-old man was found injured. The man was taken to to the town’s Victoria Hospital. His condition is still unknown.
Locals reported seeing three ambulances outside the police station on Friday.
A probe into the circumstances surrounding his death is now under way.
The Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service said: “We’ve been made aware of this man’s death but we have not received a death report as yet.
“COPFS have instructed the PIRC to investigate the circumstances.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “The Police Investigations and Review Commissioner is carrying out a Crown directed investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 36-year-old man who was taken into custody at Kirkcaldy Police Station on Thursday, September 17, 2020.”
Hamilton’s death comes five years after Sheku Bayoh died while being restrained by police officers in Kirkcaldy.
