producers sent microphones and cameras to all the nominees, scattered in 125 places around the world.

The Schitt’s Creek winners got their trophies delivered to them in a restaurant-style set-up in Ontario, Canada, by a person dressed in a hazmat suit disguised as a tuxedo.

The show also won the award for best comedy, with Dan personally winning Emmys for writing and directing.

After the success of Fleabag in 2019, this year’s ceremony was a disappointing night for British and Irish talent.

Olivia Colman, Jodie Comer, Brian Cox, Jeremy Irons, Helena Bonham Carter and Paul Mescal all ended up with nothing in their acting categories.

But Dundee-born Brian, who plays media mogul Logan Roy in Succession, was mentioned when his co-star beat him to the best drama actor award.

The 74-year-old was with wife Nicole Ansari and their sons Orson, 18, and Torin, 16, at their house on the New York/Massachusetts border.

Jeremy Strong, 41, who plays Brian’s son in Succession, ensured the Scot was honoured in his tribute.

Accepting his first Emmy at home, Jeremy, who plays Kendall Roy in the show, insisted his co-star was as deserving of the accolade, while admitting it was show creator Jesse Armstrong’s writing that helped get him nominated in the first place.

He said: “I owe this to you, Brian Cox, I share this with you. Thank you so much.”

Succession won four Emmys but the big winner on the night was Watchmen, which took 11 awards including best actress for Regina King and outstanding limited series.

It wasn’t just the awards making this year’s show interesting.

Jimmy Kimmel hosted from the

Staples Centre in Los Angeles, although Jennifer Aniston made a surprise entrance.

Before announcing the winner, Kimmel sprayed down the envelope with a hefty amount of sanitiser as a joke about germs and threw it in a bin, which was set on fire.

Jen then stepped in with a handy extinguisher but it took her three attempts to douse the flames.

Earlier in the evening, the former star of Friends offered a peek at her pre-Emmys routine, which involved champagne and face masks.

Then she staged a surprise reunion by appearing onscreen with her former co-stars Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow.

Jennifer, 51, joked they have been living together since the 90s, telling the show host: “We’ve been roommates since 1994, Jimmy.”

Courteney, 56, added: “Of course I’m here, we live together.”

Then Lisa, 57, walked into the shot to say: “Where else would I live?”

Jennifer was nominated as best drama actress for her role as TV presenter Alex Levy in The Morning Show but lost out to Zendaya, who won the prize for Euphoria.

At 24, it makes her the youngest actress to win the award.

Zendaya could not hide her delight at the win, fighting back tears while clutching the Emmy surrounded by her jubilant family.

“There is hope in the young people out there,” she said, before addressing protesters who are still marching through the streets across the US.

She said: “I see you, I admire you, I thank you.”

Also at home was former T4 host and Radio 1 DJ turned actress Jameela Jamil, who ditched her usual red carpet look to wear her pyjamas to the virtual Emmy Awards.

Her Netflix comedy drama show The Good Place was nominated for seven awards but won none. Jameela, 34, wore white PJs and added some glitz by wearing a sequin dressing gown over the top.

She shared a picture of herself lounging on her sofa on Instagram and wrote: “Wearing PJs to the 72nd Emmy awards ( from my house)) is myy kind of vibes.”

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver was named best variety talk series for the fifth successiveessive year, and the British comediann accepted wearing a red Liverpoolrpool FC hoodie in honour of hiss beloved team.

After winning his recordcord fifth Emmy Award, RuPaul dedicated it to one of the Dragg Race’s contestants Chi Chi DeVayne, eVayne, who had autoimmune disease scleroderma and passedd away last month.

He also urged Americanscans to vote in November’s’s US presidential election.

He said: “The only political olitical statement I want to makeake is this – love.

“Love for our LGBT brothers thers and sisters, love for black queens and brown queens, eens, and love for the United States ates of America, where a little gay boy with nothing more than han a pussycat wig and a dream am can build an international nal platform that celebrates es sweet, sensitive souls uls everywhere.”

I owe this to you, Brian Cox, I share this with you. Thank you so much JEREMY STRONG AFTER PIPPING HIS SCREEN FATHER TO BEST ACTOR EMMY
