THE family of a Glasgow man who fell to his death from the balcony of a hotel in Turkey have paid tribute to him.

Loved ones of Tony McDowall said they had been overwhelmed by kind messages after the death of the 28-year-old who was “always the first to offer his support during hard times for others”.

Tony was spotted dangling from a hotel in the Beyoglu district of Istanbul before plunging to his death last week.

The Scot, from the Isle of Arran, fell from seven storeys high on to the street.

A public fundraiser has been launched in a bid to raise money for a headstone.

More than £8500 has been raised in less than 24 hours, smashing the £1000 target. A statement on the Just

Giving page read: “Last week we lost Tony McDowall to a tragic accident whilst on holiday.

“Since then, his family and friends have all been overwhelmed with the many messages they have received from so many offering their support during this incredibly difficult time.

“Tony was always the first to offer his support during hard times for others and this is something that has shone through within the many stories people have shared.

“This is an opportunity to repay the love and support Tony shared with others and to pay tribute to Tony’s memory and the many great times and nights out we all shared.

“Sarah, George and Sam would like to thank everyone for their messages of condolence, stories, fond memories of Tony and the many offers of support.

“This has been a source of comfort during these hardest of times. “Rest easy, lad, we love you.” Devastated friends took to social media to mourn the loss of the popular Tony.

One said: “You will live forever in our hearts.”

A Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson said: “We are supporting the family of a British man following his death in Turkey and are in touch with the local authorities.”
