TV cop legends are reunited on Loose Women

- BY TOM BRYANT

CAGNEY & Lacey are turning their attentions from villains on the loose to Loose Women – 32 years after their hit US cop series ended.

The crime-fighting duo – Sharon Gless and Tyne Daly – are to appear on the ITV show for their first joint TV interview in more than a decade.

Sharon, 77, made her name as hard-drinking policewoman Christine Cagney, while Tyne, 74, played Mary Beth Lacey.

Watched by millions every week, the show was set in the fictionalized 14th Precinct in New York City and ran for 126 episodes through the 1980s.

It played heavily on the contrast between the two women’s lives – Lacey a married mum and Cagney single and career- minded. Their appearance is part of Loose Women’s Reunion Week, which will also feature EastEnders duo Patsy Palmer and Sid Owen, both 48 – who played Bianca and Ricky – and Vicky Entwistle, 52, and Bruce Jones, 67, aka the Battersbys on Coronation Street.

A Loose Women insider said: “We’ll be reuniting the pairings on screen and they’ll relive their highlightsgg from o working togetherer and their most memorable timeses on sets.

“We find out what they’ve been up to since,e, if they’ve stayed in contactntact and how they look backack on the shows that madede them household names.” es.”

As New York cop Cagney, Sharon ron won two Emmys – but off screen, she struggled, and has spoken previously of how she battled booze.

She said in 2017: “As soon as they’d yell ‘wrap’, a Styrofoam cup with Scotch and ice was put in my hand.

“I’ve battled demons. My character on Cagney & Lacey was an alcoholic.

“I was facing the same demons. I hated to look at myselfy on screen. TheThhe only time I’d watch myself, I’d mix myself a stiff drink and after a couple I’d say, ‘Looks good to me’.” She later married the show’s executive producer, Barney Rosenzweig. Since Cagney & Lacey ended, she has performed in West End theatre and enjoyed roles in BBC hit The State Within, CasuCasualty and US television dramas incluincluding Nip/Tuck, The Trials of Rosie O’NO’Neill and Queer as Folk. Tyne has also had a stellar career, with six Emmys – four aas Lacey. She has playplayed stage roles from Mama RoseR in Gypsy to ClytemneClytemnestra in Agamemnon.emnon. She previouslypre said: “I got lucky with Cagney & Lacey and got to be a hero. “TThen I played my share of vivillains.”
