Feeling lousy is not fault of virus says Jak

- BY GORDON PARKS

JAK ALNWICK insists St Mirren’s coronavirus struggles are not to blame for their recent miserable run in the Premiership.

The Buddies keeper was sidelined following a positive test for the virus along with fellow stopper Dean Lyness during a run of five defeats from six games.

The Englishman isn’t holding up illness as an excuse for slipping to the foot of the table.

He said: “You can always use excuses and look at different things.

“We started the season well but sometimes you just go through bad runs. I’ve been at clubs before and thinking we were going to get promoted and we got relegated.

“When you are having a bad spell you just need to dig in. We will do well if we can play like we did in the second 45 minutes.

“Although we didn’t create much we were committed and on the front foot.

“I don’t think you can blame the virus. Bobby Zlamal came in from Hearts and did brilliantly.

“We will just work hard and I’ve no doubt we will dig in ahead of a tough game at Aberdeen on Friday.”

Alnwick admitted he was more fortunate than many who test positive for the virus.

He said: “I was ill for two days but not with the symptoms you would expect from coronavirus.

“A lot of people are worse than others. I was lucky in that I’ve got over it pretty quickly. I had two days of feeling under the weather.

“It’s serious. Some people get a positive test and don’t have symptoms, some get it really bad and end up in hospital.

“The numbers are going up which is unfortunate because we wanted to get the fans back but I think it’s only right we keep them away. I would like everyone to stay safe.”
