JONES IS QUICK TO IMPRESS AT GERS

- BY MICHAEL GANNON

RICKI LAMIE knows Motherwell can’t afford to keep paying the penalty for moments of madness.

The defender has seen his side concede eight spot-kicks this season after giving away another two in the 5-1 chasing by Rangers on Sunday.

Nearly half of all the goals Well have let in have come from free digs from 12 yards and Lamie insists it’s time to cut out the penalty-box shenanigans.

He said: “It would be easy to just say it’s misfortune but there are too many to say that. There are errors at every penalty you can pinpoint.

“But collect ively sometimes we are guilty of inviting it. On Sunday if you concede numerous set pieces or invite balls in to your box, the likelihood of a ricochet or something going against you is heightened. We’ll need to put it right as we can’t keep conceding goals like that.

“We’ve lost 18 goals this season and eight have been penalties. Trevor Carson is an amazing keeper but it’s a free shot from 12 yards and nine times out of 10 it’s in the back of the net.”

Lamie wasn’t looking for excuses for the battering at the hands of Rangers but admitted Well were out of gas against Steven Gerrard’s in-form side.

A gruelling schedule of games and a long-haul trek back from Israel two days before taking on the Ibrox men was far from ideal.

Their poor start never got any better and the two handball decisions got lost in the wash as the Light Blues ran riot.

Lamie said: “It was a tough start and you are always on the back foot when you concede early.

“It was a hard afternoon against quality opposition but we didn’t make it easy for ourselves. There was a bit of fatigue.

“We’ve played midweek the last few weeks but then so have Rangers. We were beaten by the better side.”
