Getting past Celts gave us a Serg in confidence

-

FERNCVAROS boss Sergei Rebrov insists he knew his side could make history when they won at Celtic Park.

His admission came after they qualif ied for the Champions League group stage for the first time in 25 years.

The Hungarians stunned the Hoops last month when they defeated them 2-1 at Parkhead in the second qualifying round.

The Budapest side had to negotiate four rounds to qualify. They also beat Djurgardens of Sweden, Croatia’s Dinamo Zagreb and topped it off this week by edging past Norwegians Molde on away goals after a 3-3 draw away and a goalless stalemate at home.

Former Spurs and West Ham striker Rebrov has been hailed as a miracle worker in Hungary and the Ukrainian reckons beating Celtic was the catalyst for their run.

He said: “We have developed enormously even this season in our European run. I’m very proud of my players, even if the last 10 minutes of the game with Molde was very nervewracking. It was exciting.

“The players have worked so hard this season and deserve this success.

“Looking back, I think when we went to Glasgow and won when no one gave us a chance meant the players believed they could do anything.

“Although there were no fans in the stadium, we could hear our supporters outside the ground. It’s amazing for them.

“I’m proud to work here at such a historic club. Now we want to perform well in the Champions League for the honour of Hungary.

“We don’t want our journey to end here.

“We want to make a new story in the group stage.”
