THE SATURDAY JURY

-

1 HOW will the Old Firm fare in the Europa League group stages?

Both got into the groups last season and managed to progress out of them and there is no reason to think they can’t do so again.

It will be tough but they should both be aiming to get to the knockout stages. The big problem for the pair will be managing their squads as the fixture list is going to be fairly brutal from now until the New Year.

Both have got very recent experience of dealing with this stage of what is still a very high standard of competition. Both qualifying for the latter stages last season was huge and I wouldn’t put it past them to repeat that.

2 WHO needs to get busy in the final few days of the transfer window?

Celtic need a left-sided defender and Rangers are hunting a midfielder. The rest don’t seem to have much cash. Holding on to players is just as crucial as buying.

Steven Gerrard wants another midfielder while Celtic could do with a left-back and another wide man. Every club in Scotland will want to add but finances are tight and holding on to key men could be a success in the window.

The Old Firm have delivered group stage football in Europe so should be looking to add that final piece of the jigsaw. At the other end of the table St Johnstone and St Mirren are both needing a fresh injection of goals.

3 ALLAN CAMPBELL is wanted by Aberdeen and Hibs. Where is his career going?

The Motherwell star will end up getting a good club and a good contract in England if he takes his time and waits for the right opportunity as it will surely come for him.

Campbell will play in the English Premier League. He is quality and can go all the way. Another year at Fir Park, a new contract to get the club some dosh and he’ll star in the Championship before making the leap to the top flight.

A player I’ve admired for the last year and I’ve always thought he’s a Derek McInnestype midfielder. But I think Campbell’s future could lie south of the border and I think he would flourish in the English Championship.

4 WHERE does Paul Lawrie stand in Scottish sport as he retires after 620 events?

Paul Lawrie has given as much to the game of golf as he has got out of it and he’s won the biggest event in his sport. He’s a true Scottish sporting icon.

Lawrie must go down as one of the greats with his epic Open triumph and Ryder Cup heroics. His grassroots work is just as impressive. The honours system is a pile of nonsense but the Aberdonian should be a Sir.

Right up there. A Major winner, a Ryder Cup hero, a hugely charming character and now giving so much back to the game through the Paul Lawrie Foundation. He is without any doubt a Scottish golf legend.
