Craig claims Saints strike up a balance

-

CRAIG CONWAY is confident St Johnstone have the marksmen needed to net the points.

But the Perth midfielder also believes a new addition will help them do that after failing to find the net in five of their last six games.

It might come too late for tomorrow’s clash with Celtic but boss Callum Davidson has targeted a different style of striker to bring out the best in Stevie May, Callum Hendry and Chris Kane.

Conway said: “If you’ve got a focal point or a target man, they’d benefit from flick-ons and knock-downs.

“But that’s down to the manager. As players we’re just focusing on contributing. If we don’t get anybody in we’ve just got to get on with it.

“But it would improve us and give us a bit of a different dimension. I’ve seen it in the past so often with strikers, when they get a goal a few others will follow quickly.

“If we can get somebody in great but it’s not the be-all and end-all. As a team we have to take responsibility. I’m confident the goals will come either way.”

The summer arrival from Salford knows slowstarters Saints have to buck-up at both ends of the park to start hauling themselves up the table. And he’s eager to share the burden.

Conway said: “When you’re missing a lot of chances you’re always open to losing a goal. But it would be unfair to blame the defenders. If we can score the first goal it’ll give us a much better chance.

“If you play in an attacking position it’s not just about creating, you have to bring some goals as well.

“It all boils down to players taking responsibility, myself included. I could have given a bit more and added a goal or two.

“We’ve not been able to score of late and we have to put that right.”

Despite a sluggish start, Conway insists it’s too early to press the panic button.

He added: “It’s easy to get carried away with not picking up wins and not scoring many but we’ve definitely got time to fix that.

“We’ll be trying to keep a clean sheet – which is the most important thing – and nick one at the other end.

“It’s going to be a really tough test but we’re more than capable of getting a result.

“The quality Celtic have makes them a tough nut to crack. But it’s not an impossible task.”
