I’m perfect for power of Lyndon

Callum wants pair-up after Dykes square-up

- BY DAVID McCARTHY

CALLUM PATERSON spent Saturday afternoon trying to whack Lyndon Dykes.

But tomorrow night he’d love nothing more than a chance to double up with Scotland’s new strike star to deliver a knockout blow to Israel’s hopes of making the Euros at the expense of Steve Clarke’s team.

Paterson, who moved from Cardiff to Sheffield Wednesday last week, made his Hillsborough debut against Dykes’ QPR and ended the match as an emergency centre-back.

That put the former Hearts man in direct opposition to ex-Livi striker Dykes, who scored in first Scotland goal in last month’s 2-1 win over the Czech Republic.

Paterson said: “Up front is where I’m most effective.

“I can play in a lot of positions but I’m at a stage where I need to look to one and make it my own.

“Sheffield Wednesday have signed me to play up front even though I have the No.5 shirt.

“The owner is a bit funny about the numbers so I had to end up taking what I was given.

“In a sense I was surprised to move but the (Cardiff ) manager thought it was time. Sheffield Wednesday are a massive club and I’m thankful to them.

“I actually finished the game playing centre-half due to injuries.

“He (Dykes) is a very good pl ayer and I had to give him a couple of elbows!

“He did exceptionally well for them and was arguably their best player at the weekend.

“I liked the big man and I am looking forward to working with him in training this week. I think we could play together.

“Anyone who knows me is aware how hard I work and I do think it could be beneficial for us to play together.”

Paterson, who has 12 caps to his name, missed several squads before returning as a late call-up for the last camp.

He said: “It’s great to be back in the fold as this is a massive game for the country as a whole.”
