No talk of Euros until we see off the Czechs

- BY GORDON PARKS

SCOT GEMMILL reckons his Scotland kids can only start talking about Euro qualification if they take care of the Czech Republic on Friday.

The Under-21s boss says a win over the Group Four leaders can open a door towards the finals due to be co-hosted by Hungary and Slovenia next year.

The Scots sit four points behind the Czechs with a game in hand and four matches still to play ahead of the Tynecastle clash.

And Gemmil l said: “There’s no doubt about it, a result would be incredible in terms of trying to push as far as we can and that’s the priority.

“It’s about us getting that performance correct and if we have a conversation a f t e r wa rd s abo u t qualification then it would be an enjoyable one.

“I just focus on our performance. It’s not about looking at the other scores,

“We try to make the preparation as clear as possible and hopefully our work during the week is seen on Friday night.

“It’s exciting and it’s what we want to be involved in for our young players.

“I want the players to progress to the full squad and this is the best way to do that, by playing in games like this where there is pressure to perform.

Scotland drew against the Czechs last October and Gemmill wants his players to show the same grit and resolve this time.

He said: “It will probably be even more intense and physical than over there.

“The Czechs are very fast and have dangerous players we have to contain.

“But I have a lot of trust that the players can execute the game plan because they have shown a consistency that they are willing to do that work.”
