Michael Gannon Gersgaffermust showkeepingAlf Bond is real deal
ALFREDO MORELOS doesn’t do much taking in the Scottish media these days so it’s impossible to know if he’s a James Bond fan.
It’s a shame we’ve not heard a peep from him since Translategate back in February.
We may never know if he’s a 007 nut but he has something in common with the MI6 man.
Both will now need to wait until 2021 for their big release.
The news the new Bond has been put back a year is not such a bad thing given how rank the rest of Daniel Craig’s dog’s dinners have been.
They make you pine for Sir Shhhhean’s swagger or even Roger Moore’s hooked eyebrows.
But, similarly, it’s certainly good news for Rangers the wee striker will be staying on the small screen in Scotland.
The trick for Steven Gerrard is convincing the Colombian it is as well.
This long drawn out transfer window hasn’t been helpful to Morelos. It’s little wonder his head was turned. It would be spinning with so much speculation about him.
Sure, he fancied France, but Lille’s plan to pay up in instalments like the man from the Pru was rightly KO’d.
Forget about interest from the Middle East. Fiercely ambitious Alf has huge international aspirations. It’s the big leagues he wants, not collecting an early pension in semiretirement.
But none of that matters for now as he is still at Ibrox and can’t get to where he wants unless he gets back to the Morelos of old.
That form is in there somewhere. This is the man who scored 14 goals in Europe before
Christmas last year. He still gets battered about his Old Firm record but ask Porto, Feyenoord, Young Boys and Legia Warsaw if he’s any good.
But he’s hit just three in 19 league games in 2020 and that’s where it really matters this term.
Morelos is still being a nuisance and you could argue it’s his movement and strength up top that has created the space for others to plunder.
You still want the main man scoring though, but it’ll be up to him.
Gerrard no longer needs to cajole, console and cotton-wool Morelos.
He has other options. Jermain Defoe is fit again, Kemar Roofe and Cedric Itten have joined.
It’s head down, sleeves up time for him and no nonsense off the pitch
Morelos got away with a lot last term as he knew he was irreplaceable.
Not now. It’s head down, sleeves up time for him, and no nonsense off the pitch either.
Gers have shaken the money tree again this summer to go all out to win the league.
Gerrard would love a little more, show us a boss who doesn’t.
But coughing up more than 10 million quid in a year when funds are taking a pasting is a sign of intent.
Now it’s time for Morelos to show the same.
Bond might be off the grid until next year but Morelos needs to dig out his licence to thrill.
