COVIDIOT MP ASKED TO RESIGN

- BY JONATHAN GEDDES

THE local SNP branch of coronavirus MP Margaret Ferrier has called on the shamed politician to resign.

Rutherglen SNP Constituency Association issued an statement expressing that they are “hurt and disappointed” by her actions.

Ferrier has been suspended by the SNP after she travelled to London despite having coronavirus symptoms.

After speaking in Parliament, she found she had tested positive for the disease, but defied medical guidelines by choising to return by train to Scotland.

She has been asked to resign by First Minister Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP’s Westminster leader Ian Blackford.

The local branch has also offered to help office staff who could lose their jobs if Ferrier quits.

They stated: “The Rutherglen SNP Constituency Association has been contacted by many members who share our shock, anger and sadness at the recent actions of Margaret Ferrier MP.

“We are also acutely aware of the anger that has been voiced by many of Margaret’s constituents.

“Being colleagues and friends of Margaret, we are of course concerned for her well-being, and have sent her our best wishes for a speedy recovery. However, we fully support and agree with the party’s swift and decisive action taken to remove the whip from Margaret, suspend her party membership and to ask her to step aside as our MP. After convening an emergency meeting last Friday evening, we made this clear to her in writing.

“We did so with a heavy heart, knowing how hard-working and committed an MP and campaigner Margaret has been to this point. To say we are hurt and disappointed by her actions is an understatement.

“We have advised Margaret that she should do the right thing and resign now. This would be the honourable course of action. Margaret’s staff, who we have a great deal of sympathy with, are directly employed by her and not the party. We are happy to work with them to support them in any way we can.”

Ferrier has remained silent since her statement last week.
