Mystery of the Scots teacher found dead wrapped in a bloody duvet

Family claim he was smothered and battered but cops who found body reported it as not suspicious

- BY JOHN JEFFAY

THE bloody death of a Scots teacher who received threats to his life is to be reinvestigated.

Ramsay Urquhart, 33, was found covered in blood with his body wrapped tightly in a duvet two weeks after he moved to London.

Police described the tragedy in April last year as “unexplained but not suspicious” and a post mortem found the death was “unascertained”.

But his dad Murdo, from Keith, Moray, believes Ramsay may have been attacked and has been campaigning for a full investigation.

Murdo, 67, has now secured a fresh investigation by a coroner in Sunderland.

He said: “All I want is justice for my son. I want the coroner to accept that my son’s death is unexplained or suspicious in order for a new investigation to be launched.

“I believe my son was smothered then battered to death and I think there has been a cover-up to protect those who initially investigated his death.”

Ramsay had been living with his parents until two weeks before his death, when he moved to find work. The business studies graduate stood as a UKIP candidate in Glasgow Central during the 2010 general election and in a Moray Council Elgin by-election in 2014.

His family called police after Ramsay’s wife Pan Ei Phyu, 30, was unable to contact him. They had been concerned about his mental health.

Officers found his body in a room in a shared property.

The family have since learned Ramsay received death threats in the days before the tragedy.

Pan, from Myanmar, met Ramsay while they were teaching English in China in 2014.

She said: “It’s more than a year since Ramsay died and I still do not know what happened.

“He was only in London two weeks when he passed away. We’d speak on the phone every day and then, when I tried to call and message, there was no response.

“When it went a couple of days, I got in touch with my father-in-law.”

Murdo and his wife Susan claim new evidence is still being uncovered.

He said: “We made numerous phone calls on April 16, 2019, to police in London and made a visit to our local police station in Elgin to try and get someone to listen to us as we were worried about our son’s mental health, and his wife could not make contact with him.

“After ignoring our pleas for help, two officers finally went to Ramsay’s home and found him face down on his bed, surrounded by blood on April 17.”

Ramsay’s body was released 12 days later following a post mortem but the family were denied access before he was cremated. Murdo said: “There has been a catalogue of failings in the investigation of my son’s death.

“After a number of months, it came to light that two officers had been to Ramsay’s home two days before he died because he had received death threats.”

The Metropolitan Police Service said: “The Independent Office for Police Conduct, having conducted an independent investigation, has informed the MPS and the coroner that none of the officers and police staff members involved had a case to answer for misconduct.

“However, the MPS has agreed with the IOPC that management advice be given to four officers and a member of police staff.”

The deputy chief coroner confirmed the investigation and inquest hearing had been transferred to Sunderland.
