HORNBY HAS NEW GOAL OF MAKING IT TO EURO FINALS

- BY MARK WALKER

FRASER HORNBY is desperate to write another piece of Scotland history after becoming the Under 21s’ all-time top scorer.

A hat-trick in the 7-0 win in San Marino this week catapulted the Reims striker ahead of Scott Booth and Jordan Rhodes with 10 goals in 16 caps.

Now Hornby wants to captain Scot Gemmill’s side to their first Euro finals for 25 years.

The young Scots have two games left in their group – at home to Croatia and away to Greece. They sit in second place with a game in hand over leaders the Czech Republic.

A draw against the Croatians – which will be played on November 12, the same day as the senior side travel to Serbia for their Euro 2020 play-off – and a win in Athens would be enough to see the Scots qualify for next year’s finals in Hungary and Slovenia.

But ex-Everton striker Hornby said: “We’ll be going into the Croatia and Greece games with the same mentality – we want to win them both.

“We have put ourselves in a really good position and we’ve made it ours to lose really.

“The group of lads that we have are well aware of the tasks ahead. We are all confident of winning the group.

“It would be great if we could qualify as well as the senior lads.

“It was a very proud night for me in San Marino. To captain my country was amazing for me and to get the win in such a manner was terrific.

“All the boys are delighted because it was also our highest ever win.

“We went about our business in the right manner and it was a really professional performance from us all.

“To become the top scorer is a really good achievement for me.

“As a striker, you always want to be scoring goals and to be getting individual records is just a bonus really.”
